Concerned by the rate of unsafe abortion in the country and its resultant consequences, Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), has said it would partner Ipas to combat the ravages of unsafe abortion by training more health workers on post - abortion care in the country.

SOGON, noted its President, Prof. Joseph I. Brian-d, was currently developing research proposals covering priority areas of reproductive health concerns such as Maternal Mortality, Complications of Unsafe Abortion, Reproductive cancer, Family planning, Sexually transmitted infection including HIV, Reproductive health of young people.

He made this disclosure at the press briefing of the 9th International Congress, and 49th AGM and 50th Anniversary of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) in Abuja.
According to him, "The theme of the 9th international congress - SOGON at 50: Promoting women's health in Nigeria” is all embracing, connoting what the Society has done and stood for over the past fifty years of its existence.

"The sub - themes of the congress - "advances in infertility management and fertility regulation"; " safety nets in maternity healthcare in Nigeria"; "the mother, newborn and sustainable development goals (SDGs);" and reproductive healthcare are also all encompassing and subtle remainder to all of us as to the wide range of women's health concerns begging for renewed and increase attention in Nigeria.”

Prof. Brian-d said: "Ipas is one of the organisations that we are partnering with even though their area of action is mostly on reducing the ravages of unsafe abortion and also women's sexual and reproductive rights. These are key areas that SOGON focuses on.

"Every year, we train in partnership with Ipas train house officers on women centre post-abortion care and at the end of which they have their capacity built to be able to solve the problem related to unsafe abortion and they take this along to their youth service and they are saving a lot of lives from there. So that is one of our key areas to partnering with Ipas. We help them to develope a curriculum in the training. Both for the doctors, the middle level providers, the nursing midwives and even the issue of town shifting, we are assisting in building the capacity of all cadets of health workers towards making pregnancy safe and combating the ravaging spate of unsafe abortions in the country."

He continued: "We are also working on the Obstetrics/Gynaecology morbidities such as Obstetrics fistulae and Pre-Eclampsia, Nutrition in the Adolescence, Pre-pregnancy, Pregnancy and Post-partum period; Gender issues and Menopause."

Stressing further, he said, "We have worked hard to justify my keywords of ''feasibility and impact", using the instrument of Advocacy. Training, Clinical Services and Research to leverage activities on the six thematic areas of our 2013-2017 strategic development plan. We have begun to initiate the sub-regional Association of West Africa Societies of Obstetrics and Gynaecology which hopefully will streamline and harmonize women's health care in the ECOWAS sub-region."
