The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria in Sokoto State yesterday vowed to resist any attempt to appoint a doctor or nurse as head of the proposed
Primary Health Care Development Agency.
The state government recently sent a bill for the establishment of the agency to the House of Assembly.
Briefing newsmen yesterday, the union Secretary, Alhaji Umaru Kudu, said doctors and nurses lack the basic training to head the agency and appointing them would hinder its efficiency.
He reiterated that the union would vehemently reject any such attempt.
“A situation where a medical doctor is appointed to head the agency without basic primary health care background will no doubt hinder the good intention of
effective and efficient primary health care programme in the state,” he said.
According to him, the new agency should have a seasoned primary health care worker as its Executive Secretary with primary health care oriented staff as
directors and subordinate officers because its programmes and activities focus on the rural populace.
