MEDICAL and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta branch, on Tuesday, gave its management a 14-day ultimatum to address their lingering problems else it will embark on strike to press home its demands.
State chairman of MHWUN, Comrade Isah Attah, disclosed this during the congress of the union that took place at the FMC premises, Ebute-Meta, Lagos, saying the union came up with the resolution due to the management’s refusal to follow the path of peace but instead creating an atmosphere where industrial harmony could no longer be guaranteed in the institution.
Addressing the workers at the maternity end of the hospital, Attah noted that after several deliberations with the management, it seemed they were not ready to address the problem and the plights of the workers. Attah explained that part of the grievances of the union include the recognition of Senior Staff Association by the management instead of MHWUN, discrepancy in remittance of pension deductions, outsourcing of staff, even though there were competent ones within, compulsory enrolment of their members in Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, non-upgrading of their members and incessant power outage in the hospital.
The Chief administrative officer of FMC, Mr Harrison Henry Etim, in his reaction, noted that the management had written a letter to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity to seek clarification on their requests, saying the reply had since been forwarded to the union.
Etim explained that the issue of whether members should belong to union or not was the exclusive right of individual’s staff, saying individual members had the liberty to join any union they desired.
On the issue of poor electricity supply in the hospital, Etim said the hospital was on 14 hours electricity supply daily, through its generators despite the challenges of electricity supply in the country.
