Ghanaian government has engaged about 177 Cuban doctors to help in healthcare delivery in the country as industrial action by local doctors persists.
As an interim measure to cushion the hardship of Ghanaians, the government stated that it was retaining all the Cuban doctors, who had completed their programmes and were set to the leave the country.
Ghana health minister Alex Segbefia yesterday ordered the striking doctors to resume duty or face disciplinary measures.
During a press conference in Accra yesterday he said “all members of the GMA, who have not reported to full duty shall be considered as being on strike and in clear breach of the Labour Act.”
The minister instructed all heads of facilities to monitor and provide weekly updates of which health workers had resumed duty.
Alleging that some persons were intimidating doctors, who refused to join the strike action, Segbefia warned that perpetrators would be prosecuted.
Over 2,000 doctors are on strike over better conditions of service. Following their decision last weekend to extend the strike further by two weeks, government pulled out of negotiations with them and accused the doctors of acting in bad faith.
