World Radiography Day is celebrated on 8 November each year. The date marks the anniversary of the discovery of x-radiation by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. Today marks a wonderful day in the lives of Radiographers as they celebrate their annual WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY.
Radiography is the art and science of using high energy waves in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Discovered on November 08 1895 BY PROFESSOR WILHELM CONRAD ROENTGEN accidentally in his laboratory in Germany. It got a ground breaking role in medicine as blind practises were eliminated and precise diagnosis made possible.
Radiography has two major specialties; (A) DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHY and (B) THERAPEUTIC RADIOGRAPHY.
(A):Diagnostic radiography has 3 main subspecialties which are
(1) MEDICAL RADIOGRAPHY which includes; Conventional radiography,Ultrasound,Fluoroscopy,CT-SCAN,MRI SCAN,Mammography(breast
screening),Dental Radiography,Angiography,Theatre Radiography etc.
(2) INDUSTRIAL RADIOGRAPHY; which includes Radiographic Non-destructive testing of vessels at airport and cargo, sterilization of equipments,Ultrasonic detection of mineral deposit/pipeline leakage etc.
(3) FORENSIC RADIOGRAPHY; which includes X-ray detection of fake art works,medicolegal imaging,Identification and matching of dead bodies of mass casualties,dating of human remains/ancient works etc.
(B) THERAPEUTIC RADIOGRAPHY has these two subspecialties;
Radiotherapy: which is the use of Radiation for the treatment of diseases such as cancer and Nuclear Medicine which is used for precise organ scan and treatment.
Radiography as a profession is so broad as it spreads across living and non-living things.In the field of research,we have molecular imaging,nanoimaging,T-RAYS and many others.Currently ,the world is in urgent need of radiographers as not more than 3000 radiographers serves a large population of 150million Nigerians.
So,key in and join the moving wagon as we celebrate this year's WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY.
