Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has donated two mannequins for paediatric intubation training to the Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja.
Chief Representative of JICA, Mr Hirotaka Nakamura, who made the presentation, said the mannequins donated to the hospital were expected to be used by participants of previous trainings to perform simulation exercises on neonatal resuscitation through step down trainings to their colleagues, through which other hospitals can also benefit from such trainings.
According to him, JICA every year receives about 100 Nigerian government officials for knowledge co-creation programmes in Japan with about 10 to 15 of them from the health sector.
He explained that in 2014, the agency trained two paediatricians, one of whom was from Kubwa General Hospital and the other from Maitama District Hospital, on prenatal and neonatal health care.
Nakamura pointed out that each participant gained new knowledge and skills addressed to their home country’s development and the agency expects all ex-participants to disseminate that knowledge to the relevant colleagues within their organisations, according to the action plan set at the programme. He urged the FCT Hospital Management Board to acknowledge the ex-participants’ skills as an important asset in reducing the burden of neonatal mortality in the FCT and also requested the management of hospitals to continue to provide an enabling environment for such learning activities.
Medical Director of Kubwa General Hospital, Dr Ahmed Danfulani, who received the donation, commended JICA for its efforts in strengthening capacity building as well as improving services in hospitals.
He said with the present donation, the rate of losing children will reduce and assured that the materials donated will be judiciously used.
The medical director, who appealed for more assistance in the area of capacity building, said the kits donated will be put to immediate use with a training next week for all staff in the hospital.
