The chief medical director of University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Dr Peter Alabi, has called on the federal government and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the hospital with funds to build a special neonatal unit.
Speaking to journalists in Gwagwalada, Alabi said the neonatal unit will provide expert, round-the-clock care for premature and ill new born babies.
Dr Alabi said the new unit is necessary because the present unit is small and congested, calling on the government and other well-meaning Nigerians to help with the construction.
He said: “The unit is already getting congested so we need to expand it. We are appealing to the government and all well-wishers to help raise some fund for us to have a special building for this purpose.”
He also said the hospital has currently achieved over 75 per cent reduction in neonatal mortality, adding that the new neonatal unit will help a great deal in reducing the mortality to the barest minimum. According to him, “We have achieved over 75 per cent reduction in the neonatal component as the number of our incubators have risen from one in 2009 to 17 now.
“Over 90 per cent of extremely preterm neonates born less than 1kg at UATH during the first half of 2014 survived their seven days of life. Nigeria as a nation may have made no significant neonatal progress in 25 years target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but UATH has achieved the target.”
Recall that the United Nation reported that Nigeria has failed to meet the expected 67 per cent target reduction on the mortality rate of children between 0-5 years in 25 years of the MDGs.
