The management of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital on Sunday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the Federal Government’s prompt intervention on the alleged Ebola Virus Disease scare.
There was a reported case of EVD scare in the tertiary health institution following the death of a patient who manifested symptoms mimicking viral haemorrhagic fever in the hospital.
But preliminary tests conducted by relevant authorities in line with international standards proved negative as it excluded Ebola and Lassa fever.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Dr. Thomas Agan, expressed gratitude to the President Buhari’s-led Federal Government.
He said the attention given to the hospital following the alleged outbreak of EVD was a demonstration of the importance that the Presidency placed on public health.
Agan said, “We are delighted at the prompt attention paid to the hospital on getting the news and the immediate dispatch of a team of experts, an indication of the importance that the Presidency pays to public health care delivery. “Besides, the maturity with which the Ministry of Health collaborated effectively and harmoniously with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation in handling the alleged reported case as well as the subsequent decontamination of the Accident and Emergency unit of the hospital is worthy of commemoration.”
According to him, the public enlightenment on the issue by relevant agencies of government convinced the international community that Nigeria is Ebola free.
He said the hospital was ready to discharge its tertiary health functions, if given the right facilities and environment.
The CMD also said the alleged case might have given President Buhari an insight into some of the challenges faced by the tertiary health institution.
Further commending all stakeholders and members of the public for their individual and collective roles in confronting the scare, Agan enjoined the Federal Government to give the UCTH a priority, considering its “strategic roles of not just as a tertiary health care provider, but also its border location, attending to patients from neighbouring Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.”
