A group of unemployed Environmental Health Officers, EHO, has urged the Lagos State Government to properly recognise their role in the society. Espressing their grievances in a roadshow recently, the group lamented government neglect and refusal to employ their members as the cause of shortage of health workers in the state.
Spokesperson for the group, Mr. Opeta Joel said: “When you look at the population of Lagos which is over 20 million, with such population, Lagos State is expected to have over 2,500 EHO but what we have today is less than 500 and as a result of this, so many aspects that need urgent attention are being neglected. “We are celebrating the theme ‘Our Children, Our Future’, and what we are really trying to do is call the attention of government to the fact that EHO, Nigeria and worldwide has been neglected, resulting into a whole lot of negativity such as high rate of fire incidents, building collapse and floods.”
He said according to the World Health Organisation, WHO standard, one environmental health officer should be assigned to 8.000 people.
“We want government tolook into recruiting more people in order to increase manpower so that we can meet the WHO standard and meet the goals for which this profession was actually created and also begin to shield ourselves from diseases, epidermics and disasters,” he said.
A member of the group, Ms. Rasak Aminat, urged the government to look into the shortfall in EHO employment and to also conduct a census of Lagos citizens. “We are just appealing to the government to look into the employment of more environmental health officers.
“Lagos is over populated and we have fdewer health officers in place. An appraisal or assessment can be carried out in Lagos state in order to see the population and number of environmental health officers in each local government.
