The Vice Chancellor' of University of Abuja, Professor Mike Adikwu, has called on the Federal Government to consider increasing the admission quota for the Veterinary Medicine programme at the university.
Adikwu spoke in Abuja when the university graduated the third set of its Doctors of Veterinary Medicine. He spoke through the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor S. A Asala, at the third induction ceremony of the new Doctors of Veterinary Medicine, held at the university's main campus.
This, he said, was in view of the fact that the programme was now stable with adequate facilities and running on schedule.
He said that the third oath taking showed that the faculty is now steady after going through the turbulent period that the Veterinary Medicine programme.
He said that many candidates who sat the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and were qualified for admission had chosen the University of Abuja but that only a few would be admitted because of the low admission quota allocated to it.
The vice-chancellor said facilities at the university for training the veterinary doctors had been certified to be up to standard, hence the accreditation accorded the programme already by the relevant bodies.
He advised the new doctors to be disciplined and protect the integrity of their profession, at all times.
In his address, the President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Professor G. H. Sharubutu, lauded the graduates of the faculty saying that he was yet to receive any report of unethical conduct about those that graduated earlier and urged the new inductees to emulate their predecessors.
He said that the training being offered and the monitoring activity of the Concil have been confirmed to be adequate evident in the induction of the third set of graduates.
The President of the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Dr Amos Edgar, said that a lot of opportunities await graduates of Veterinary Medicine, but warned that there are also challenges with the opportunities; therefore the graduates need to persevere and endure to be successful.
He urged them to contribute to the development of their society by diversifying and harnessing the various livestock resources abundant in the country, adding that diseases such as Ebola and others are also opportunities for the new doctors to make their mark in the society.
The Registrar of yeN, Dr A.M. Avong, while administering the oath on the seven inductees, said that with the induction, the new veterinary doctors had the license to practise their profession anywhere in the country and advised them to be disciplined to avoid a revocation of their licenses.
Meanwhile, the Governing Council of the University of Ahuja has approved the promotion of six senior aca- demics to the rank of professor following the receipt of positive assessments of their publications.
A statement by the university's Deputy Registrar, Information, Mr Waziri Garba, in Abuja said the Council approved the promotions during its 69th regular meeting held on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th December, 2014 which considered the report of the external assessors and recommendation for other staff promotions.
Garba, further disclosed a total of 73 other staff cutting across the senior and junior cadres of the various departments of the university were also promoted during the exercise covering the 2009/2010,2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 promotion years conducted each October in the University.
