The University of Nigeria I Nsukka (UNN) has hon-oured five emeritus Professors of medicine for their contributions to the institution's college of medi-cine.

The provost of the College of Medicine, UNN, Prof. Ernest Onwasigwe, explained that he organised the reception to appreciate the emeritus Professors, who are all members of the college family.

He commended the vice chancellor of UNN, Prof. Chukwuma Ozumba for upgrading the professors to the revered academic status of emeritus Professors in recognition of their contri-bution to education and medicine.

The provost said that the recognition by UNN was the first time five Professors from the college of Medicine were elevated at the same time.

Meanwhile, the Chief med-ical director of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku -Ozala, Enugu State, Dr Chris Amah, said that the medical training and leadership tutorials he acquired at the college of Medicine of the University of Nigeria, UNN, transformed him and prepared him for leadership.

Describing the University of Nigeria as an institution and a citadel of learning with a difference, Dr. Amah, a famous paediatric surgeon and an alumnus of UNN, expressed profound grati-tude to his teachers for mak-ing him achieve his child-hood dream of becoming a medical doctor.

Speaking at a reception organised by the college of medicine of UNN, in honour of its five emeritus Professors, Nene Obianyo, Peter Ebigbo, John Oli, Jonathan Azubuike and Paul Okonkwo, in Enugu, the UNTH boss praised God that all the Professors being recognised were his teachers at the College of Medicine.

Dr. Amah, stated that although, he appreciated the efforts of the medical giants, it was the doyen of paedi-atric medicine, Emeritus Prof. Nene Obianyo, that truly molded him to what he is today.

According to him, despite that this rare African scholar and medical genus did not have the opportunity of political positions, while in active service, Prof. Nene Obianyo's rare feat in the sep-aration of the Siamese twins at the UNTH in 1976, the first in Africa, has made her my role model any day, am proud of her and I remain grateful to her.
