The management of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric hospital, Uselu, Benin City, has tasked members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ ) to live up to their civic responsibilities in order to create a new Nigeria devoid of ethnic and religious strife.

Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Osasu Olotu gave the charge Wednesday, when the Executive members of NUJ, Edo state council, paid him a courtesy call in his office where he conveyed the management decision to partner with the union.

He noted that the 51-year-old hospital under his watch, has been “fully dedicated for the treatment of persons with various kinds of mental disorders and as well as drug addiction problems.

“I have a tool, which is the stethoscope as a doctor. You have a tool, which is the pen. With your pen, you can destroy, you can make and enhance as well as recreate. So, I would advise that we use our pen to create a new Nigeria that we are all yearning for in these day and times, no matter what are your contrary beliefs, inclinations or dogmas.

“So, I plead to everyone of you, when you are leaving office, ensure that you and your executives, re-write the history of NUJ. The handing-over paradigm of the operations of NUJ to that of transparency, accountability and that of partnership to improve, increase and to progress. That is a goal, I want you to work towards. You and I would be heroes of tomorrow if we do what we need to do today and do it right”, he said.

The state chairman of NUJ, Comrade Roland Osakue, recalled the long standing relationship between Psychiatric hospital and the union and likened the “empty treasury” he inherited from his predecessor in December last year, as global evil that must be abolished.

According to him, “our predecessor who left this office, left no kobo for us and the computer gargets they also left behind have all broken down”
