A university don and chief medical director (CMD) of University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Akwa Ibom State, Professor Etete Peters has called for concerted effort to ameliorate the plight of the disabled in the country.

Etete Peters who stated this at the weekend while addressing newsmen in Uyo on the International Day for Persons with Disabilities said that society and   governments across board should endeavour to give people with disabilities adequate support in terms of empowerment and sustainable inclusion in developmental programmes.

The CMD who is also the president of the Nigerian Thoracic Society explained that person with disabilities should not be seen as people in need of charity or handouts but should be empowered.

Describing persons with disabilities as having equal rights with every other person in the society, Professor Peters frowned at the discrimination accorded them and their non-inclusion in many societal programmes.
