VACANCIES AT PROJECT RESEARCHERS, CULTURAl POLITICS OF DIRT IN AFRICA, 1800-PRESENT (DIRTPOL)

Vacancies exist for outstanding and ambitious researchers in the humanities and social sciences to work full-time at the University of Lagos as part of a large research team on an international Cuilural Studies project. The project, 'The Cultural Politics of Dirt in Africa, 1880-present', will span five years. it has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC), an arm of the European Union (EU). The successful candidates wiM join three teams of researchers on the proiect-one in the UK, one in Lagos and one in Nairobi-- to conduct interviews, gather data, and undertake media studies and content analyses in a variety of urban settings. The Lagos arm requires three Project Researchers (PRs) in 
1) Public Health, Urban Sociology andior the Environment;
(2) Media and Communications:
(3) Education to generate data and reports on four key themes-coonialsm, the environment, sexuality and ethnicity-and to examine every day urban practices in Lagos, with particular attention to the ways in which urban encounters and identities are represented and interpreted through English and local-language categories denoting dirt. The Project Researcher that we need must have sound experience in conducting sustained research preferably at the postgraduate level in relevant disciplines. Proven skills are required in spoken and written English, spoken Nigerian Pidgin and in spokea and written Yoruba. www.medicalworldnigeria.com. Core provision will be made for tailored research methods training for all Project Researchers in the UK for a 3-4 week period in March/April 2014.

•  Ability to use discipline-specific software and methodologies for the presentation and analysis of data 
•  Experience in the completion of independent research projects 
•  Transcription and translation skills 
Specific Job Descriptions 
I. Project Researcher 1: Public Health and the Environment 
This project researcher will be responsible for identifying resources and building relationships in the field of public health and waste management. Key areas of qualitative research will include interviews with public health users and providers, and interviews with users of and residents on local waste management sites. Translation, transcription and report-writing skills are essennel io this post. Experience in the identification, collection and interpretation of resources is a cere requirement, as well as an ability to work independenUy in chailenging research contexts. 
 The successful candidate will be expected to: 
•  identify core resources and communities in the field 
•  develop in-depth qualitative questionnaires 
•  identify, build communication with and undertake intervtews with individuals in the field. 
•  identify and collect resources in consultation with line managers. 
Qualification: 
A bachelor's degree with a minimum of second class (lower division) and a Masters degree in Sociology, or Public Health, or Social Anthropology, or Development Studies, or Environmental Studies. or a related discipline. 
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE 
A. Duration of appointment Successful candidates will be appointed as project staff on the ERe-sponsored Dirtpol 
project and shaH be empioyed fuli-time from tst February 2014 to 31st August 2017, and half-lime from 1st Septmber 2017 to 31st August 2018 only 
B. Salary and condition of service: Successful candidates will be appointed at the level of Assistant lactures on 
CONUASS 2
