The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has decried the paucity of veterinary doctors in some states and also called on the National Assembly to speed up the repeal of obsolete veterinary laws.
President of the Association, Dr. Edgar Amos Sunday, revealed this at the opening of the national economic council and states exco meeting of the 2016 Veterinary Summit held in Abuja. He said while states like Plateau, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Oyo and Rivers have less than ten veterinary doctors in their respective states, other states like Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi and Yobe have better representation.
Dr. Sunday also said that effort to repeal weak and obsolete relevant veterinary laws in the National Assembly suffers setback on any progress made each time a new Assembly is newly inaugurated.
He said that since the resurgence of the bird flu in Nigeria in January 2015 two million birds had so far been de-populated and compensation paid to affected persons.
