The management of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Ebute Metta, Lagos, has said the hospital did its best to resuscitate Charity Dazan, the final year student of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, who was referred from the Yaba College of Technology Medical centre, on February 12, 2016.
Reacting to a position paper issued by the National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS, over the death of the student, FMC's Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Harrison Etim, explained that efforts to resuscitate the patient proved abortive as she stop breathing within 10 minutes of arrival.
Presenting the sequence of events leading up to the incident, Etim, who described as unfortunate, the sequence of events trailing the death, noted: "Charity was rushed to our hospital in poor condition at 1.1 Oam on Wednesday and was admitted with case note file No:338202. She was accompanied by a nurse from Yaba College of Technology.
Emergency care "On presentation, she was very pale, cold and clammy, anxious and gasping. We commenced emergency care immediately, vital signs done, temperature was 35*C. Patient was feeble, respiration - gasping, blood pressure was undetectable, oxygen therapy was commenced immediately."
Further, he said an intravenous infusion line was set up and blood sample collected for blood transfusion, but noted that all efforts to resuscitate the patient proved abortive as she stop breathing at 1.20am, within 10 minutes of arrival.
"No amount was demanded or collected before attending to late Charity Dazan. The corpse was taken back by the same ambulance that brought her to the hospital.
It's unfortunate that misinformation about sequence of events have caused extra pain to relatives and friends of the lady. We continue to provide efficient health care services within available resources," Etim explained.
In its position paper, NAPS had demanded compensation to the family of the deceased and voluntary resignation of the FMC Medical Director.
