The President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Mr. Ahmed Yakasai, has called for a better relationship among health professionals, especially between members of the PSN and the Nigerian Medical Association.
Yakasai, who stated this at a briefing in Lagos on Monday, said the rivalry among various professional groups had caused many setbacks for the sector.
He said, “We are ready to work with all associations to move the health sector forward. We will work in harmony with the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who is a doctor, to ensure the enactment of the right policies to improve the health indices of Nigerians.”
The PSN boss, who also spoke on the Lassa fever outbreak, linked its scourge in the country to the poor primary health care system.
He regretted that the government rested on its disease surveillance mechanisms following the attainment of the Ebola-free status in the country in 2014. “We have conditioned our nation with a health system that thrives on ad hoc measures rather than build structures, which are both enduring and sustainable. The fundamental problem with our health system appears to be the unfortunate emphasis on curative rather than preventive health care.
“In the active days of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, the erstwhile leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health promised more proactive measures to actualise the primary care concept, which the National Health Act has legitimised. Typical of us, we have waited for another epidemic called Lassa fever, a recurrent annual epidemic, to emerge as a reality and public health emergency, before coming up with vintage reactionary slogans,” he said.
Yakasai said that the pharmacists had been sensitised on their role in the early detection of Lassa fever to enable them to contribute their expertise to fighting the outbreak.
He added that the PSN would continue to promote and support drug research and development especially in vaccine production.
