Striking doctors of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-Araba, Lagos, have said that they will stay away from work for as long as management of the hospital remains unresponsive to their demands.
The doctors, under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) embarked on an indefinite strike last Monday over condition of services in LUTH among others.
When Daily Trust visited the hospital, only a few consultants and some health workers were seen attending to patients.
General Manager, ARD, LUTH chapter, Dr. Sekumade Adebayo Isaiah, said the strike would continue “because the hospital’s management has not shown any willingness to respond to their demands in any way”.
He maintained that the strike was not aimed at punishing Nigerians, but that it was their last option after the management refused to meet their demands despite a warning strike.
He said: “Before we make our demands, we usually conduct investigations and find out the real situation. We discovered that the management can actually meet our demands but unfortunately, the management has cultivated the habit of not responding until maximum pressure is put on them.”
But the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chris Bode, at a press conference, contradicted the doctors’ claim on the management’s attitude towards the strike.
He said the management met with the doctors on several occasions to tackle the issues, “but they chose to be adamant.”
He said LUTH management has embarked on an independent power plant project which will be ready in September this year, while efforts are on to ensure adequate water supply in the hospital.
On the issue of non-adherence to the federal government’s directive on payment of skipping allowance to doctors, he said the money has not been paid by the government. He urged the doctors to resume work “in the interest of the general public.”
