World Health Organisation (WHO) said people living with HIV in Africa are now more likely to receive treatment than others outside the continent.

WHO, in a statement to mark 2015 World AIDS Day celebrated on December 1 described the expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART) to all people living with HIV as the key to ending the AIDS epidemic within a generation.

It said over the last 15 years, more than 11 million people are receiving HIV treatment in the Africa region.

The figure, the statement adds, represented an increase from 11, 000 at the turn of the century showing that the scale-up of ART has been most dramatic.

It adds that globally, in June 2015 close to 16 million people out of 37 million living with HIV were taking ART.

“The Millennium Development Goal of reversing the HIV epidemic was reached ahead of the 2015 deadline - an incredible achievement that testifies to the power
of national action and international solidarity,” declared WHO Director General Margaret Chan.

The theme for this year’s world aids day is ‘Gettingto zero.
