The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association Zamfara state chapter, Dr Kehinde Olugunde Williams, has said 181 out of 243 medical doctors in the state are concentrated in Gusau metropolis.
Dr. Williams, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Tuesday, commended the state government for its move to recruit additional 100 and 324 nurses in addition to the upgrade of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital to compete with other tertiary health institutions in the country.

He said as at last year there were 243 medical doctors in the state, 74 for state government, 44 for semi-autonomous Yariman Bakura specialists hospital, 117 are in Federal Medical Centre and 8 are working for private medical facilities while the 14 local government shared 30 of the doctors.
"What the doctors posted to the rural areas need are, decent accommodation, power supply, good schools for their kids, good transportation system and rural posting allowance. Absence of these amenities is what discourages doctors to stay in rural area even though the situation is not peculiar to Zamfara state alone," he said.
He further explained that the state has 23 general hospitals and some of them were fully renovated and upgraded and Emergency Ambulance System was launched to help in reducing morbidity and mortality from accidents and most especially pregnant women in remote areas.
The chairman of the NMA in the state added that they had reached an agreement with the state government that the newly recruited 100 doctors would be posted to the rural areas while taking into cognizance their well-being.
"The upgrade of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital and re-equipping it with state of the art gadgets will help tremendously in providing post-graduate trainings to medical doctors in the state and this is highly commendable," he added.
