YMLSF Letter to all Medical Laboratory Science Prospective Corps Members

Good greetings to you all!

I want to use this opportunity to congratulate our prospective Corps Members who have been

called up for this current batch, for their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. You are indeed worthy to be celebrated, having passed through all the hurdles of school, struggled to be inducted, lobbied and fought to get internship placement and finally completed internship. It is indeed a thing of joy and we rejoice with you.

As you prepare to step into the orientation Camp please ensure that you are well prepared to fly

the flag and blaze the train of this noble, profession. You are an ambassador of the profession and you must remember to display a high sense of professionalism all through your service year.

First of all, please ensure that you do not go to camp with your provisional license, rather ensure you are with you original license or an evidence of such. This is because you may end up being decamped, as it will be assumed that you have not done your internship or you have not finished, which is a compulsory requirement for your NYSC registration.

Secondly, statistics have shown that institutions offering Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) as a course are less than 20% of all universities in Nigeria. And when you include other higher institutions, you know what the figure will look like. This means that more than 85% of all Youth corps members you will be camping with have never heard of MLS; while some have heard something entirely different. Therefore, whatever action you portray, will be the conclusion they will all have about the

profession.

Thirdly, try all you can to resist any none MLS from being in the camp clinic without a practicing license, in fact even if the person prove to be MLS with other means without his or are license he or she should not be allowed to be in the camp clinic as MLS. Be very sure that other people will come and test the waters; people from Science Laboratory Technology , Microbiology, Biochemistry, etc, even if they are from the National Director, your only defence against such is the proof of a practicing licence, “NO LICENCE NO PRACTICE”.

As much as I will let you know, that the leadership of the clinic is not the sole reserve of the doctors, please do not drag such with them for the sake of peace and a good working relationship in the clinic, but however you can be their leader in other ways. You can become your platoon leader and as such the Chief Medical Director in turn will be under you.

You can also become the overall parade commander and as such everyone apart from the camp officials will be under you. Some of us did so in our time and it paid off. It is more honourable to become a leader to many than just a few. However, you should do everything to assert your role in the camp clinic with a high sense of diplomacy.

I will also add, that you all should think of a project that will give you a face in the entire camp. Many people do not know their Blood group and they are forced to claim ‘O-positive’, because their biology teacher told them that ‘O‘ is a universal donor.

But you and I know that there is actually nothing like that, with the knowledge of Haemolysin, making some ‘O‘ group a dangerous blood group. So you can volunteer to educate and conduct free blood group for the entire population both corps members and officials. This is just one project amongst many.

Another challenge you should also try to resist, is the training of non-professionals by National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA) to perform HIV test. You have to stand your ground and get involved. Testing is a regulated practice in Nigeria that is only done by those whom the Law of the land permits and such permission is shown by your practicing license. Except if they are being trained to test themselves ONLY, but if the testing must be done on someone else then it must be by a licensed professional.

Lastly, I will want to use this medium to remind all Young Medical Laboratory Science Forum (YMLSF) state NYSC committees to get ready to provide the necessary support to our colleagues in your state orientation camp. This you will do by liaising with well meaning professionals in your state and other relevant associations. The State AMLSN and mostly the GMLD have being of immense support in that regard, so please do well to involve them too.

Once again congratulations to all Prospective corps members, wishing you a fruitful year of service. Towards the end of your orientation camping, we shall also inform you on other necessary steps that will guide and help you have a good service year.
