Babcock University Ilisan-Remo, 52nd Inaugural Lecture.

Babcock University, llisan-Remo, last Thursday, March 6, 2025, held its 52nd Inaugural Lecture. The Inaugural Lecturer was Professor Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia. Professor Onyemelukwe-Onuobia, a professor of health law and policy, in her lecture emphasised that:

 

1. Law is a powerful instrument for realising the right to health.

 

2. Nigeria ought to provide for a fundamental right to health in the Constitution.

 

3. Health sovereignty requires protection of the right to health and government ownership.

 

4. Nigeria should decriminalise attempted suicide as soon as possible.

 

5. It is necessary to implement key health legislation such as the National Health Act in a systematic, inclusive, and country-wide manner.

 

6. It is crucial to address gaps in quality, establish learning system from adverse events, ensure health insurance uptake and regulate digital health; and  

 

7. Government must work collaboratively with all stakeholders, including the private sector, to ensure the right to health and universal health coverage.
