Death toll arising from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) complications in Katsina State hit 19 yesterday. The figure, which forms part of an update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) late Monday night, also shows that the state recorded seven new cases of the disease.

With the new laboratory confirmed cases and 364 the previous day, the state now has 371 patients with the disease. It said 253 patients with the disease were currently on admission while 99 others have been discharged after testing negative for the virus.

Katsina is among the four states with the highest number of cases. Lagos has 5,135 cases, Kano 958 and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) 674. According to Governor Aminu Masari, less than half of the deaths occurred at the isolation centre, as most of the victims were tested and found to be positive after they had died at home or elsewhere.

Lockdown imposed on 14 councils due to the virus has been reversed, leaving only Katsina and Daura where more than 80 per cent of the cases were identified.

The state recorded its index case more than two months ago, after a private medical practitioner, Dr. Aliyu Yakubu, tested positive for the virus. However, the state government has warned that recent heinous acts by bandits would not deter it and the security agents from the ongoing onslaught against them till the war is won.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mustapha Inuwa, stated this during the funeral of the late District Head of Yantumaki in Danmusa Council, Alhaji Abubakar Maidabino.

Maidabino was killed by bandits at his house in the wee hours of Monday, while his security guard escaped with gunshot wounds during the attack. The 65-year-old monarch, whom the SSG described as a peace-loving gentleman, left behind three wives and 19 children.

Chief Imam of Yantumaki Central Mosque, Malam Babangida Sada, led the funeral prayer at the deceased’s residence. Inuwa assured that the perpetrators of the dastard act and related nefarious activities in the state would be hunted down and made to face the music.

He said three bandits, who killed an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, had also been killed by some repentant bandits aiding security agents in the current fight against banditry in the state

The SSG, however, called on the public to support government and security agents in the fight against banditry and related crimes, by providing useful information.
