APPROVAL TO RUN PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING AS POST BASIC NURSING SPECIALTY PROGRAMME IN THE COLLEGE OF NURSING SCIENCE APPROVED BY NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL OF NIGERIA

As part of the reform agenda for nursing education and practice in Nigeria, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has commenced implementation of National Diploma and Higher National Diploma (ND/ HND) Nursing programme in the approved Colleges of Nursing Sciences.

The Enabling Law establishing Colleges of Nursing Sciences provide that the College structure must cover among others, three major departments such as Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing education respectively.

This development would lead to award of Academic Certificate (HND) in addition to the Professional Certificates such as Registered Nurse (RN) and Registered Midwife (RM) or Registered Public Health Nurse (RPHN) on graduation.

Therefore, I wish to inform you that the Governing Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria at its 54th General Meeting held in June, 2021 has approved Colleges of Nursing Sciences to run Public Health Nursing as Post Basic Nursing Specialty programme.

In the light of the above, Proprietors of Colleges of Nursing Sciences with approval for implementation of ND/ HND nursing should indicate their interest in writing and await Council's approval.
