FULL REGULATION OF TRAINING OF PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING SPECIALTY OFFERED IN COLLEGES / DEPARTMENTS OF NURSING SCIENCES BY THE NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL OF NIGERIA

Sequel to the on-going reforms in nursing education and practice in Nigeria, the Board at its 60th General Meeting held 30th November – 1st December, 2022 has approved complete regulation of the training of students undergoing public health nursing programme in Nigeria. 

This has become necessary in order to ensure that Public Health Nursing is only run by approved Colleges of Nursing Sciences / Departments/Faculties of Nursing in Nigeria Universities. 

In line with the above approval, the Council hereby convey the following: 

• All ND/HND accredited Colleges of Nursing Sciences only have been approved to commence Public Health Nursing Programme. 
• Basic Midwifery graduates without basic Nursing qualification/certificate should not be admitted into any Post basic / Post graduate specialty nursing programme(s) (e.g. Public Health Nursing etc) except Post Basic General Nursing. 
• The Council shall commence Professional Examination in Public Health Nursing from May 2023 for both Colleges of Nursing Sciences and Departments of Nursing Science in Nigeria.
