We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Head of Pharmacy

Location: Abuja

 

Job Purpose

The Head of Pharmacy will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the hospital’s pharmacy services.

This includes ensuring the safe, effective, and compliant use of medications throughout the facility. The role involves strategic planning, operational management, and clinical oversight to enhance the quality of pharmaceutical care.

This role requires driving innovation in pharmaceutical care, managing a multidisciplinary team, leading quality improvement initiatives, ensuring regulatory compliance, and integrating technologies such as EHR and CPOE.

The role holder will also serve as a subject matter expert to senior leadership and play a vital role in shaping the pharmacy department’s strategic direction and contribution to AMCE’s broader mission.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Leadership and Management:

  • Lead, manage, and mentor the pharmacy team, including pharmacists, technicians, and support staff.
  • Serve as the lead advisor on pharmaceutical care, medication safety, and policy development.
  • Promote a patient-centred approach to pharmaceutical services.

Strategic Development:

  • Develop and execute strategic plans aligned with institutional goals.
  • Innovate pharmacy services such as clinical programs and medication therapy management.
  • Incorporate emerging pharmaceutical technologies and trends to improve care delivery.

Quality Improvement and Governance:

  • Ensure full compliance with national and international pharmaceutical laws, standards, and best practices (NAFDAC, NDLEA, Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, etc.).
  • Oversee formulary management and medication safety systems, including adverse drug event reporting.
  • Participate in internal and external audits to maintain accreditation and governance standards.

Education and Training:

  • Support the continuous professional development of pharmacy staff.
  • Provide clinical education to healthcare professionals on medication use and protocols.
  • Mentor junior team members and cultivate leadership potential.

Operations and Resource Management:

  • Oversee procurement, storage, preparation, and distribution of medications.
  • Implement digital tools like EHR and CPOE for optimized medication management.
  • Manage departmental budgeting and resource allocation effectively.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to align pharmacy practices with clinical needs.
  • Provide expert input to senior leadership on pharmaceutical strategy and risk management.
  • Engage with external bodies to explore funding and partnership opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent; advanced degrees are an advantage.
  • Valid pharmacy license to practice in Nigeria.
  • Proven commitment to continuous professional development.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a pharmacist.
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing hospital pharmacy services.
  • Evidence of successfully implementing strategic plans within budget.
  • Experience working in multi-specialty or tertiary healthcare environments.
