The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has strongly refuted claims circulating in a viral video that it approved a herbal tea product allegedly promoting smoking as “healthy.” The product, marketed under names such as Lung Detox Tea and Lungitox (Smokers Pride), is not registered with NAFDAC, and the agency has labeled the claims as false, misleading, and dangerous.
Rejected for Lack of Scientific Evidence
According to the agency, an application for an “anti-smoke and lung detox tea” was submitted to its Lagos State Office in 2023. The product was rejected due to unscientific health claims and the applicant’s failure to provide credible evidence of safety and efficacy. NAFDAC emphasized that the product was never approved or even submitted for formal evaluation.
NAFDAC’s Commitment to Public Health
NAFDAC reiterated its role as a science-led regulatory body, responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of all food, drug, cosmetic, and chemical products in Nigeria. The agency does not approve any product that lacks scientific validation or poses a risk to public health.
Additionally, NAFDAC prohibits:
- Therapeutic claims for herbal products without clinical trials
- Use of organ imagery on product packaging
Legal Action Under Review
The video also made baseless allegations of financial inducement, which NAFDAC condemned. While such claims are typically ignored, the agency’s Legal Services Directorate is currently reviewing the defamatory statements and may pursue legal action.
