NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA NURSES AND MIDWIVES ABUTH, PRESS RELEASE ON REVISED GUIDLINES FOR VERIFICATION OF CERTIFICATE BY THE NMCN AND A CRY FOR JUSTICE.

Posted on: Fri 09-02-2024

The entire nursing committee of ABUTH has received with considerable concerns the recent circular (N&MCN/SG/RO/MH/VOL..I/40) released by the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria Dated 7th February 2024.

The Guidelines outlined in the aforementioned circular are deemed not only detrimental to the nursing profession and its practitioners in Nigeria but also represent a direct infringement upon the rights of Nigerian Nurses.

Of particular concern is the provision within guideline number four, which stipulates that a nurse seeking verification must obtain a letter of good standing from the chief Executive typically a medical doctor. This provision not only undermines the professional autonomy of nursing but also disregards its distinct legal status as a profession.

Furthermore, the extension of the verification process to a minimum duration of six months, as outlined in the new guidelines, is deemed unacceptable. such as extension timeframe contradicts prevailing practices in other jurisdictions and is perceived as a disregard for technological advancements that could expedite the verification process.

Equally troubling is the requirement for two years of post-qualification experience as a prerequisite for verification. This criterion should rightfully fall within the purview of the employer rather than the regulatory council.

In light of the above, we respectfully request the following actions:

  • The immediate withdrawal of the aforementional circular.
  • The reinstatement of the previous guidelines as they have proven effective and satisfactory.
  • The provision of verification services at no cost to nurses, consistent with practices in other jurisdictions where a portion of professional dues contributes to such services.

We anticipate your prompt attention to this matter and respectfully await your response.
