National Health Insurance Scheme Public Announcement

Posted on: Mon 08-03-2021

It has come to the attention of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) that certain stakeholders of the Scheme especially some Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) are in the unethical conduct of inducing some MDAs for the selection of HMOs, an act that amounts to unacceptable breach of the standards and operational guidelines of the Scheme which is able to undermine the integrity of the system.

This is evidently a fall out of the recently-concluded accreditation of HMOs by the Scheme, during which some HMOs that failed to meet the criteria were delisted.

NHIS wishes to state categorically that this practice is contrary to the spirit of the ongoing reforms by the current leadership of the organisation, to reposition and sanitize the health insurance industry, particularly with regards to 'engendering transparency and accountability in the entire operations of the Scheme',

Therefore, in full expression of its statutory stewardship roles, NHIS hereby advises all stakeholders to desist from all such illegitimate transactions forthwith.

In order to stem the tide of these unwholesome practices and sustain the gains of the ongoing reforms, especially confidence building among stakeholders, full measures have been adopted to effect appropriate sanctions against all errant stakeholders.

Meanwhile, in line with the powers vested on the Scheme by the NHIS Act, the enrolees of the delisted HMOs have been distributed to all NHIS-accredited national HMOs with effect from April 1, 2021.

This notice is for the attention of the general public and proper guidance of those affected.
