The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has observed that some of the nursing ad midwifery training institutions in Nigeria often deny admission to males who have indicated interest in studying nursing/midwifery on the presumption that it is the Council’s policy.

The Council is using this medium to dissuade the traditional impression that nursing profession is intended for females and therefore, condemns the rejection of male applicants who are eligible for admission into nursing/midwifery training institution during admission process.

Gender balance is essential for the advancement of nursing profession and also offers opportunity for gender preference when providing nursing care to the patients.

In the light of the above, the Council hereby directs that there should be no gender base discrimination for admission into nursing/midwifery training institutions and further directs the Proprietors, Admission Boards/Committees/Panel responsible for students’ admission, to improve the quota of male students in order to boost the percentage of male Nurses in the nursing workforce in Nigeria.
