Job Summary

  • The purpose of this role is to support the accurate and timely diagnosis of diseases through conducting routine and specialized laboratory tests as per the State/National or International set procedures, guidelines, and standards, up on requests from authorized health facility service providers.
  • The postholder ensures quality, accuracy, and safety of laboratory testing and healthcare delivery.
  • This is a role in disease diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, contributing to improved health outcomes and the protection of vulnerable community members.
  • This role requires precision, attention to detail, and a foundational knowledge of scientific principles to ensure accurate and timely results.

Main Task and Responsibilities

  • Operate standard laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, pipettes, spectrophotometers, and autoclaves. Ensure equipment is maintained in good working order, perform routine maintenance, and notify the supervisor of any malfunctions.
  • Perform laboratory tests upon request of health facility authorized health care providers for the purpose of disease diagnosis, screening, or diseases surveillance.
  • Strictly adhere to and follow State/National or International testing algorithms, procedures, and protocols in performing laboratory tests.  
  • Explain in detail and council all patients on the laboratory test to be performed, samples to be collected along with how samples will be collected and any requirements/precautions to be taken before and or after sample collection.  
  • Properly label samples, meticulosity record and share results to the requesting health care provider.
  • Prevent any cross-contamination during sample collection, sample handling/conducting tests and ensure proper disposal of waste. Maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Ensure IPC in and around the laboratory.
  • In collaboration with health care providers and MEAL team, analyze data on regular basis and share information on trends, and flag any issues.  
  • In collaboration with the pharmacist, team leader, health coordinator or manager, ensure availability of laboratory reagents, sample collection materials, IPC materials etc. Maintains updated stock records of all the materials, reagents etc.  
  • Prepares timely requests for the replenishment of consumables, slides, reagents, IPC materials etc. medicine all times, prevent stockouts and request medicine timely from the warehouse.
  • Prepares and submits timely and accurate regular performance reports.  
  • Ensure maintenance of temperature for reagents and supplies that are temperature sensitive.  
  • Ensure that all patient-related information are accurately registered and recorded within the provided registers.    
  • Adhere to administrative directives with regards to work schedules, record keeping, patient communications, re-stocking of essential drugs, consumables, and other supplies.  
  • Collaborate with other departments as needed to ensure smooth implementation and integration of services.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor as part of the team.

Job Requirements

  • Typically, qualified, and registered laboratory technician from a recognized training institute with a valid license to practice or an equivalent qualification acceptable in the country.  
  • Previous minimum 2 years’ experience in same capacity will be an edge.  
  • Previous NGO experience preferable.
  • Effective communication and public dealing skills while performing duties in the public health care service.
  • Good English reading and writing skills.
  • Proficient and fluent in national and local language.
  • The ability to learn and use complex laboratory equipment.
  • Meticulous diligence.
