‘Over 400 Health Workers Positive’

The Chairman of Joint Health Workers Union, Josiah Biobelemoye, on Thursday said over 400 members had been infected by coronavirus. Biobelemoye, who spoke in Abuja at the headquarters of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria during an event held to inaugurate the distribution of personal protective Equipment to state councils of JOHESU, lamented that the COVID-19 pandemic was taking a negative toll on the health sector.

Among PPEs to be distributed across state councils of the JOHESU were 50,000 pieces of face masks, 15,200 pieces of sanitisers, 2000 pieces of disinfectants and 1,200 pieces of hand wash soap. While promising that health workers would not relent in protecting the citizens, Biobelemoye said the situation on the ground called for drastic solutions.

“Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 400 members of JOHESU have been infected. We also need to support our own members, who are working and sacrificing their lives for the generality of Nigerians,” he stated.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Abdullahi Mashi, represented by the Director (Human Resources), Aliyu Mohammed, said the challenges posed by coronavirus to the health sector was becoming overwhelming.
