Job Title: Pharmacy Assistant

Location: Abuja (FCT)

Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • To prevent stock out, Risk of Drug Expiry, Theft and Encourage Just in Time for all pharmacy drug items used by the hospital
  • Reports to: Pharmacist, Accountant, All Medical Doctors
  • Direct Report: Other  pharmacy staff, Nurses

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Helps health care providers and patients by greeting them in person and by phone; answering questions and requests; referring inquiries to the pharmacist.
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed medications and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt; removing out-dated drugs.
  • Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Fills in Doctor’s prescription to calculate proper dosage and to prepare appropriate cost of bill to patients for drugs to be sold.
  • Organizes medications to dispense by reading medication orders and prescriptions; preparing labels; calculating      quantities; assembling intravenous solutions and other pharmaceutical therapies.
  • Maintains records by recording and filing physicians' orders and prescriptions.
  • Ensures medication availability by delivering medications to patients and departments.
  • Prepares reports by collecting and summarizing information.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Maintaining pharmacy’s (and its patients’ employees’) safety by adhering to infection-control procedures, policies and Maintenance of pharmacy  regulations as seen in GOOD PHARMACY PRACTICE.
  • Receiving, Verifying prescriptions and packaging  of medicines for patients while ensuring Proper and accurate pricing and filling of prescription.
  • Takes weekly physical stock counts and reconciles with the computer inventory records; submission of stock sheet to the supervisor for endorsement. :  Receive order of drugs into the pharmacy and check for accuracy and then stock them on the shelves following the FIFO rule, and ensures a proper documentation of expired drugs.
  • Effectively Communicate with Patients and provides accurate drug related information to patients and attending to them in a timely manner.
  • Assisting with insurance claims processing  (HMO).
  • Ensure accurate measurements and calculations when compounding sterile and/or non-sterile preparations, review safety polices and protocols (e.g. review the master formula) and ensure compounding techniques meet Standards.
  • Ensure the label affixed to the sterile/non-sterile product is complete and accurate. Include: active ingredients, beyond-use date, and batch lot number, name and folder number, when needed.
  • When undertaking a final check of compounded sterile and/or non-sterile products. Ensure all steps are complete as per Standards: Compounding records are complete including double-check signature, active ingredients, quantity actually weighed, ingredients’ lot, manufacturer, expiry date, new beyond-use date etc. Be sure to confirm a pharmacist therapeutic check has been completed, before releasing the product.
  • Document the required information for all stages in the compounding process. Provide adequate information to the patient on how to use and store the product and when to discard the leftover.
  • And any other Adhoc duties as assigned.

Requirements

Experience:

1-3 years of cognate experience in a pharmacy

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Mathematical skills for performing accurate calculations
  • Experienced in dispensing drugs and filling prescriptions
  • Demonstrable ability to maintain accounts of medicines. (stock level, expiry date etc)
