The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is an independent humanitarian medical NGO that was created in 2009 by professionals of humanitarian medicine. ALIMA’s mission is to provide medical care in emergency situations or medical catastrophes.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Project Medical Doctor

Location: Ondo

Job Type: Full Time

Mission and Objectives

  • Provide outpatient and/or inpatient medical care to patients/beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, NCDC protocols, values and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients/beneficiary’s health conditions.
  • Knows and ensures all ALIMA medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
  • In compliance with ALIMA standard practices and protocols, ensure rational use of drugs, to ensure its effectiveness and operational availability.
  • Follow up on the evolution of the hospitalized patients, through daily visits, consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment while respecting ALIMA protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patient’s evolution.
  • Cultivate the relationship with the FMCO, SHL, and IDH stakeholders in order to implement efficiently and ensure the Medical Quality Care to the patients as well as to improve targeted population’s health conditions and humanitarian situation.

Tasks & Responsibilities

External Consultations:

  • Carrying out detailed consultations of patients following NCDC treatment protocols and noting observations on health care forms.
  • Working in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team and participating in on-going personnel training (care techniques, updating protocols etc.)
  • When assigned conduct staff health clinics (staff and dependents), in accordance with ALIMA Nigerian staff health policy while respecting ALIMA treatment guidelines.

Hospitalisation:

  • Carrying out the daily departmental round
  • Examining all the hospitalized patients
  • Explaining to the team and prescribing the care and treatments required, following NCDC protocols to ensure the rational use of medicines.
  • Keeping the hospitalization forms up to date by noting the details of examinations, diagnoses and treatments and ensuring the application of prescriptions
  • Deciding on the exit of patients according to the state of their health
  • Ensure proper documentation in the patient file including particularly the final diagnostic at discharge that will be recorded in praxis.
  • Working in collaboration with the different doctors and supervising transfers towards other departments if necessary.
  • Checking that transfusion rules are followed in the department (grouping, tests, etc.)
  • Ensuring the management and ongoing training of the medical/paramedical team in order to optimize the quality of care.
  • Take the lead in mortality review with Med-Ref and propose solutions to improve the identified gaps in both medical and nursing care.
  • Managing emergencies and while on call if necessary
  • Checking on respect for professional confidentiality and access to free health care in the health structure.
  • Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, ensuring patients/relatives have a clear understanding of the available treatment options and their eventual outcomes.

Report:

  • Make the monthly clinical report to inform the Med-Ref of their shortages, in order to maintain safety stock levels at all times in the FMCO drug store.
  • In collaboration with the lab manager, ensure Data is encoded on the OWO database on the drive.
  • Ensure medical weekly report is shared with Med Ref and in absence of Med Ref share with PC and Dep Medco.
  • Make a monthly mortality report with the Med-Ref and make recommendations.

Meetings and others:

  • Participating in medical and departmental meetings
  • Encouraging information exchange in his field of activity
  • Attend ongoing training of the medical/Research multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
  • Participating in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data
  • Passing on all problems linked to the department to the field coordination
  • Participates in meetings with other medical Team in order to ensure smooth collaboration of all departments in terms of activities running.
  • Perform any other duty as assigned by the organization through the medical referent or Project Coordinator.

Experience and Skills

Experience:

  • Degree of Medical studies., or medical profile  
  • Registered Medical Doctor.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in Lassa Context is an added advantage.
  • Previous experience with ALIMA or other NGOs in developing countries is desirable

Required Skills:

  • Essential computer literacy (Excel, Word, Outlook and Internet)
  • Well organized with good negotiation and communication skill
  • Ability to work as part of a team, a part of multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team, in emergency and under pressure, to manage stress easily and result oriented
  • Ability to work in close collaboration with MOH staff
  • Can work and create teamwork, flexible, and committed to the assigned position  
  • Interest in and commitment to ALIMA’s activities, enthusiasm to represent the organization to others, to travel to different regions of Nigeria
  • Languages: English compulsory, others are an asset like Yoruba,
  • Based in Ondo State is an asset.
