POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL, RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY NKPOLU-OROWORUKWO, PORT HARCOURT ADMISSION INTO POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES FOR THE 2023/2024 ACADEMIC SESSION (FULL-TIME/PART-TIME)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into postgraduate Programmes in the River State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt for the 2023/2024 academic session (Full-Time/Part-Time) in the following Faculties/Institutes

1. DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS AND HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

A. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Employment Relations and Human Resources Management

  • Admission Requirements into the Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Employment Relations and Human Resources Management
  • Five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, and Economics at the level.
  • Relevant Bachelor's Degrees not lower than third Class division from a recognized University.
  • Bachelor's Degrees with at least Second Class Lower Division in areas not relevant to Management may be considered.
  • Higher National Diploma at a Lower credit level.
  • Relevant Professional qualifications

DURATION

Postgraduate Diploma Programme

  • Full-time Diploma: Minimum of two(2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
  • Part-time Diploma: Minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of six(6) semesters.

2. DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY

A. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Programme in Biochemistry

B. Master of Science (MSC) Programme in Biochemistry with Specialization in:

  • Enzymology
  • Nutritional Biochemistry and Toxicology
  • Environmental Biochemistry and Ecotoxicology
  • Medical/Pharmacological Biochemistry
  • Molecular Biology and Immunobiochemistry
  • Industrial Biochemistry and Biotechnology
  • Forensic Biochemistry

C. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Biochemistry with Specialization in:

  • Enzymology
  • Nutritional Biochemistry and Toxicology
  • Environmental Biochemistry and Ecotoxicology
  • Medical/Pharmacological Biochemistry
  • Molecular Biology and Immunohistochemistry
  • Industrial Biochemistry and Biotechnology

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Biochemistry

Applicants must be:

  • Holders of a third-class degree or second-class lower division degree in Biochemistry or another related discipline from the Rivers State University or any other Institution or equivalent status recognized by the senate of the Rivers State University.
  • Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) with a least, lower credit classification or its equivalent in a related discipline obtained from a recognised institution.

2. Master of Science (MSC) Degree in Biochemistry

  • Applicants shall possess a Bachelor of Science (BSC) degree in Biochemistry or relevant discipline from the Rivers State University or any other institution or equivalent status recognised by the state of the River State University. The degree shall not be less than Second class (lower division) or equivalent level with a CGPA of 3.00 points on a 5.00 point scale. An applicant who holds a PGD with a CGPA of 3.50 or above may apply for the Master of Science Programme.

3. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Biochemistry

Candidates seeking admission into the PhD programme in Biochemistry will be required to have the following entry qualifications:

  • MSC Degree in Biochemistry of the Rivers  State University or any University recognized by the Senate of the River State University. Candidates must have a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5.00-point scale 0r 2.80 on a 4.00-point scale.
  • Candidates who are deficient in any area will be required to remedy the deficiency in the MSC programme.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit a well-written proposal on their intended research interest to the postgraduate studies committee (PSC) of the Department. The proposal will be defended orally at an interview before the members of the PSC committee and only candidates who score 60% and above will be admitted into the programme

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

  • The full-time PGD Programme shall be a minimum of 2 semesters (12 months) and a  maximum of 4 semesters (24 months) while the part-time program shall be a minimum of 4 semesters (24 months) or a maximum of 8 semesters (48 months)
  • Full-time MSC Degree Programme shall be a minimum of 2 semesters (12 Months) or a maximum of 4 semesters (24 months) while a part-time MSC Degree Programme shall be a minimum of 4 semesters (24 months) and a maximum of 8 semesters (48 months)
  • The Full-time PhD Degree Programme shall be a minimum of 8 semesters (48 months) while the part-time PhD degree programme shall be a minimum of 10 semesters (60 months) and a maximum of 12 semesters (72 months). For PhD applicants, brief research proposals on their intended areas of study should also accompany the application forms.

3. CENTER FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND FOREST RESOURCES (FULL-TIME/PART-TIME)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND DURATIONS FOR THE POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES FOR THE CENTER FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND FOREST RESOURCES

1. PGD Programmes

  • Candidates with 3rd class and pass degrees are eligible for the program

2. Master Programmes

  • Candidates with 2nd class lower in relevant field of study are eligible for this programme

3. PhD Programmes

  • Candidates with a master, CGPA of 3.5 and above, in the relevant field to study from any accredited University are eligible for the programme

DURATION

The Diploma and Certificate Programme runs in weeks and generally, programmes are tailored to modular applications so exams are taken at the end of each module

  • PGD (1) One year duration
  • MSC (1) One year duration
  • PHD (2) Two years duration

4. CENTER FOR WATER AND SANITATION STUDIES (FULL-TIME/PART-TIME)

A. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in water, Sanitation and Hygiene (12 months-2 semesters)

B. Master of Science (MSC) in Water and Sanitation (24 months i.e 4 semesters)

MSC with Specialization in:

  • Regenerative Sanitation and Circular Bioeconomy
  • Sustainable Water Supply Management
  • Health and Hygiene Management
  • C. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Water and Sanitation (36 months i.e 6 semesters)

PhD with Specialization in:

  • Regenerative Sanitation and Circular Bioeconomy
  • Sustainable Water Supply Management
  • Health and Hygiene Management
  • D. Professional Master of Science (PMS) in Water and Sanitation (24 months i.e 4 semesters)

PMS with Specialization in:

  • Regenerative Sanitation and Circular Bioeconomy
  • Sustainable Water Supply Management
  • Health and Hygiene Management
  • E. Professional Doctorate Science Degree (PDSD) in Water and Sanitation (36 months i.e 6 semesters)

PDSD with Specialization in :

  • Regenerative Sanitation and Circular Bioeconomy
  • Sustainable Water Supply Management
  • Health and Hygiene Management.

REQUIREMENT ADMISSION OF MASTER OF SCIENCE/PROFESSIONAL

Master Degree

  • Show competent use of written and spoken English as well as critical thinking
  • Prior bachelor, HND or PGD in an accredited programme with relevant courses and credits in any of the following disciplines applied sciences, social sciences, health sciences, arts, engineering, humanities, education and management
  • Minimum of second-class Honours or Distinction (HND) from nationally accredited institutions.
  • At least 3.0 CGPA on a 5-point scale or GPA or at least 2.5 with a PGD or high-level related working experiences or 2.5 CGPA and a minimum of three years post qualification work experience for the professional path
  • Research proposal of 1,500 - 2,000 words on any subject of the candidate's interest for Academic path or business case of 500 - 1,000 words on any subject of the candidate's interest (for professional Path)
  • 500-word motivation piece stating why they are interested in the programme and why they should be admitted
  • Admission will also be premised on oral interviews or tests and other requirements in the university system for Master's degrees
  • And other requirements in the university system for a Master of Science degree

REQUIREMENT ADMISSION FOR PhD/PROFESSIONAL DOCTORATE DEGREE

  • Show competent use of written and spoken English as well as critical thinking
  • prior relevant Master's in an accredited Programme with relevant courses and credit in any of the following disciplines applied sciences, social sciences, health sciences, arts, engineering, humanities, education and management
  • Minimum of Upper Credit or Merit (If by Research only) in any national-accredited or globally-reputable institutions or  
  • At least 3.5 CGPA on a 5-point scale or GPA
  • Average of 60% overall taught courses and above 60% score in research work
  • Evidence of research abilities and capacity to write academic papers for publications
  • A research proposal of 3,500 - 5,000 words on any subject of the candidate's interest in academic path OR a business case submission of about 2,000 - 3,000 words on any subject of the candidate's interest in professional Path
  • 500-word motivation piece stating why they are interested in the programme and why they should admitted.
  • Admission will also be premised on oral interviews or tests
  • Other requirements in the university system for PhD/Doctorate degrees

MODE OF APPLICATION

Application for admission to any of these programmes shall be made online by logging onto www.ust.edu.ng and making a payment of forty-five thousand Naira (45,000) only, Using Interswitch verve-enabled cards. Application forms should be completed online, downloaded and hard copies submitted to the secretary, Postgraduate School along with the following

  • Photocopies of certificates
  • Certified academic transcripts. (It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that copies of their academic transcripts are forwarded under confidential cover directly to the Secretary Postgraduate School, Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo Port Harcourt).
  • Letter of reference from three referees, including one from a previous academic institution, stating that the applicant is qualified to undertake advanced studies and research and that the Referee is confident that the applicant will benefit from the training
