The President, Nigerian Academy of Science, Prof. Mosto Onuoha, has lamented the low COVID-19 testing in the country amidst the daily reduction of confirmed cases.
Onuoha, in an interview with our correspondent, said the country should not relax with the reducing cases of COVID-19, urging more people to go for testing at any of the approved laboratories.
“I’m worried about the reduced cases being recorded recently by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. I believe the media must play their part for a new reawakening. Look at a nation like Israel that has lockdown the country again. Why are they doing all these when they had loosened? Because the cases are going up again; I don’t personally believe the cases are going down in Nigeria, I think there is weariness on the part of the people.
“I think people are tired; I also suspect maybe it is also about money. Each COVID-19 test cost a lot of money, I don’t know what the actual cost is, but it could also be part of the problem. Even when we have expanded our testing capacity, I think people are probably just tired because God has been merciful to us in this country; people are not dropping dead like in the US and other high-risk countries. The results we are seeing daily can easily confuse people, I think we need to encourage people to get tested so that we can isolation those who have the disease and keep a larger population safe,” Onuoha said.
