The Faculty of Engineering and Medical Sciences, University of Benin (UNIBEN) yesterday disclosed that it has produced a clinically tested ventilator, which it presented to its Health Centre to contain the spread of coronavirus in Edo State.

Public Relations Officer of UNIBEN, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, made this known in a statement in Benin City. She said: “A clinically tested ventilator, produced by a team of researchers in the Faculty of Engineering and Medical has been presented to the Management of the University led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lillian Salami.”

Leader of the team, Professor Kensington Obahiagbon, explained that the group, known as the COVID-19 Initiative, took peculiar circumstances of the country into consideration in developing the ventilator.

“Hence the ventilator was produced to work without electricity for at least one hour. It is designed to function in a dual mould for both adults and children,” Ehanire said. She added that the Vice Chancellor commended the team for the feat, especially for looking inwards in seeking solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic.
