The Program started with the arrival and registration of attendees. Then an opening prayer, the national anthem and Nurses anthem.

 

The anchor later went on to introduce the guests for recognition. He also did the honour of giving a wonderful welcome address.

 

 One of the guests on the high table, Reverend Olusegun Salako gave the opening charge, where he discussed the importance of spirituality in Nursing. He encouraged everyone to have a spiritual life regardless of their religion for success in the Nursing Profession.

 

Then the Keynote speaker,  Prof Prisca Adejumo, gave her address on Fixing the Cracks in the Nigerian Nursing Education. She highlighted several Cracks that need fixing in the Nigerian Nursing Education. Here are the Cracks highlighted:

 

🔸 Crack 1: Shortage of Nursing Academia: Prof Prisca Adejumo talked about the shortage of Nurses in the Nursing Academia as this is eviden in 'brain drain'. Many Nurses due to the working condition in this country can no longer cope, hence they leave the country in search of greener pastures leading to Shortage in the Nigerian Nursing Education. The Key note speaker however noted that only motivation can stop this. Proper remuneration and encouragement of Nurses is the way forward.

 

🔸 Crack 2: Incivility In The Nursing Profession: Prof Prisca Adejumo spoke on the incivility that has eaten deep into the profession. She gave instances of incivility amongst Nurses like the way they talk, address their colleagues, comport themselves, lack of respect and so on.

She said the way to combat all these is to be respectful, Civil and thoughtful. 'Little things we do go a long way' ~Prof Prisca Adejumo.

 

🔸 Mentorship in the Nursing Profession: Prof Prisca Adejumo spoke on the importance of Mentorship in the Nursing Profession. She talked about how Mentorship can go a long way in bringing up people that would take the Profession to greater heights.

 

She talked about *how not to treat a Nursing student,*which was by 'Shouting'. She said that shouting does not solve anything as it only prevents the student from heeding to correction, as well as pumping adrenaline into the blood stream of person shouting, which would eventually lead to High blood pressure.

 

Prof Prisca further emphasised on how students should be treated. Treat students like your Children ~ Prof Prisca Adejumo. She employed all lecturers to always ask the question, 'Am I really treating this students the way I am treating my children?

She employed everyone in attendance to enrol in one Mentorship program or the other.

 

Prof Prisca Adejumo concluded her address by talking about the factors that made her who she is today.

God and hard work. She emphasised on both and ended the address.

 

Afterwards, Prof Prisca Adejumo was celebrated as she celebrated her 50th birth anniversary. Pictures were taken with her and her cake was cut.

 

The  sponsors of the program were given time to talk.

 

Then there was the 'Hear Nursing Students Speak' were several  questions were asked by students on issues in Nursing.

There was a Lecturer's Panel discussion were issues raised by students were addressed by lecturers.

An *Associate Professor in the department of Nursing Science  Dr Okolawan emphasised without mincing words his total hatred for the HND programme that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria are planning to implement, he said we are not technicians and we don't need technician certificate....

 

He emphasized on mentoring the students on politics, he said this is one of the major ways to achieve any meaningful development in Nursing..

 

He emphasised on venturing into politics by students, that this will not only pave way for development in the profession but will also transform the profession.

 

He talked about giving maximum support to the students leaders in our Departments because they need people to fall back on when the victimization becomes intolerable to them.

 

The Chairman Board of Directors at the Nursing and Midwifery Council said that the Council are working effortlessly in ensuring that Internship becomes the order of the day, she sighted reasons why it has not started fully, she said it was not covered in the budget of the teaching hospitals.

 

She encouraged students to be more exposed, they should attend both Local and International Summits and Seminars as these will not only improve them but they will be able to keep pace with their counterparts in other part of the World, she said these among many other hot issues..

 

The program was concluded with a vote of thanks and closing prayer.

 

We learnt a lot and we hope that more of such conferences can be organized for the greater good of the Nursing Profession.
