The Association was formed at Ibadan ( Adeoye Hospital ) in May 1958, and she had her first conference at Ibadan.

The Association had consistently struggled for the emancipation of the profession without the legal framework of a regulatory body until the year 1987 when the dividend of the struggle was realized., with the enactment of the Decree No. 42 of 1987, which conferred a regulatory authority on the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN). The ARN did all she could to make the Federal Government establish the RRBN in 1987. Even with the establishment of the Board, the Association remained a driving force for the Board as it ( the Board) was struggling to find its footing.

Now , with the Board fully functional and asserting itself, the pressure on the Association is reduced as both bodies synergize to move the profession to greater heights.

The Association became a foundation member of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists in 1961 and has continually played a significant role on the international scene

The ARN is guided by a Board of Management which is the governing board of the Association. It consists of the principal officers of the Association. It serves as an advisory body to the Council.
