FG Poise to Reposition Oral Health In Nigeria
Minister of Health, Prof.C.O.Onyebuchi Chukwu has said that the Federal Government is leaving no stone unturned to making sure that Oral Health takes its pride of place.
The Minister stated this in Abuja Monday at a Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the National Oral Health Week Celebration with the theme: ‘Healthy Teeth For Healthy Lives: A National Task’.
He noted that the improvement of Oral Health is certainly a gateway to improving the general health of Nigerians.
He stressed that the Oral Health Policy in November 2012 has witnessed a new dawn adding that since the launch of the National Oral Health Policy, it has set a tone for a change in the Nigerian Oral Health System and has charted a new course for the practice of Dentistry in Nigeria.
He said that in line with Mr. President’s Transformation Agenda, the Ministry has equipped all tertiary institutions spread across the six geo political zones with state of the art dental units.
Prof. Chukwu disclosed that some panoramic X-Ray Units for dental Schools were procured to further expose dental students to best global practices in Nigeria.
He said that the Dentistry Division of the Ministry is collaborating with the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) to further enhance accessibility, affordability and utilization of Oral Health Care Services in the Primary Health Care Centres.
He recalled that the President of the Senate, Senator Dr. David Mark graciously accepted to champion the course of Oral Health in Nigeria and was inaugurated as the National Oral Health Champion in November 2012.
Continuing, he said that dental Regulatory Bodies, saddled with the responsibility of regulating Dental Professionals in the country are making formidable progress to ensure that quackery is eradicated in the practice of Dentistry in Nigeria.
He also announced that Nigeria at the 55th National Council on Health approved the inclusion of dental profiling as part of routine medical check up adding that a standardized data-collecting format is being developed to actualize this.
He said that the Ministry is developing basic tools for monitoring and evaluating minimum standards of care in the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels of Dental care in Nigeria.
He observed that funding remained a major challenge, apart from the regular budgeting allocations; funds are being sourced from the Sure-P Programme which will further strengthen Oral Health activities.
While reiterating that improving the general health of Nigerians is a national task which requires the involvement of all stakeholders, he urged all stakeholders involved in Oral Health care delivery to continue to worrk harmoniously to improve the Oral health status of all Nigerians.
