Hauwa was only 24 when she was murdered. Saifura was killed on her 25th birthday. Both were midwives in northern Nigeria, an area of great need. They were courageous, compassionate and dedicated to helping others.
This is a glimpse of what their families loved about them.
Hauwa was full of life.
She loved people. She was dynamic and sociable. She was loved.
Hauwa studied hard to become a midwife while she was still young. This was her first major job after graduating.
On Saifura's Death
Everyone relied on Saifura. She took great joy in making other people happy.
As a child she loved school and excelled academically.
She was her mother's closest friend. She herself was a mother of two young children.
No words are strong enough to describe the brutality and senselessness of their deaths. Hauwa and Saifura's families will continue to endure unimaginable pain.
Two other women are still being held. Countless more are abducted across the region. We’re desperate for their release.
Peter Maurer @PMaurerICRC the President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also condemed the killings when he said:
It is with deep horror that I hear of the execution of Hauwa in #Nigeria.
@ICRC condemns this senseless murder; an act of contempt for humanity.
Hauwa was a brave young midwife working to bring life into the world, and we mourn her loss with the greatest sorrow.
Hauwa's shocking death comes only a few weeks after her colleague, Saifura, was also killed.　
These young women shouldn't be defined by their deaths but remembered for the courage and compassion they showed in their short lives.
