Doctors Without Borders / Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international, private, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization. Our organization offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters, to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. We have been working in Nigeria since February 1996. A Memorandum of Understanding between Doctors Without Borders / Medecins Sans Frontieres and the Federal Government of Nigeria facilitates this. We are at present co-operating with the Federal Ministry of Health, State and Local Government departments of health on various health projects.

Job title: Head of Mission - Assistant
Duty Station: Sokoto
Main objective and responsibility of the position
Support the Head of Mission in the administrative part of coordination tasks, ensuring a smooth relation with local and national authorities, contributing to the context analysis and follow-up, providing translations and interpreting when necessary.
Description of the responsibilities/activities
 Assist the Head of Mission in the context analysis, disseminate relevant context information to the coordination team, regularly inform them on key issues, update general information on the context for MSF internal documents, draft briefing papers and advise on cultural appropriateness of organisational activities and individual behaviours
 Assist in the elaboration of MSF OCA Nigeria Policy, project plans, advocacy strategy and other strategic documents.
 Keep good knowledge of counterparts in different administrations and file field contacts (other NGO’s, UN agencies, local authorities) verifying that they are easily accessible in order to facilitate contacts and meetings.
 At the request of the Head of Mission, represents MSF in meetings (NGO, official bodies, administration).
 Ensure the follow up of relevant administrative dossiers such as the MSF registration in a country, working permits, immigration policies, national protocols, etc.
 At the request of the Head of Mission, prepare and conduct an information briefing focusing on the country context for International, and National staff.
 Translate documents and act as an interpreter when needed
REQUIREMENTS (QUALIFICATIONS):
Education: University level studies or similar.
Experience:
Experience/understanding of public health programs and epidemic response
Experience in management ideally in large and/or complex structures
Knowledge and experience in international policy and context analysis
Experience in dealing with national authorities, national and International NGO’s/UN bodies
Previous experience in humanitarian aid, preferably with MSF.
Essential, very good understanding of the functioning of the different administrations in Nigeria (critical). Strong negotiating and problem solving skills, patience, diplomacy and resilience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Ability to work independently
Flexibility and ability to work on multiples tasks with shifting priorities
Commitment to the aims and values of humanitarianism
Languages: English and Hausa.
Knowledge: Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
*Willingness to work and live in Sokoto.
