National Universities Commission (NUC) A Two Days Stakeholders' Meeting on Capacity Building for Masters Program in Geriatric Medicine in Selected Nigerian Universities

 

The Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius A. Okojie OON, wishes to invites stakeholders in the health sector, to a 2-day Stakeholders' Consultative Meeting on Capacity Building for Delivery of Masters Program in Geriatric Medicine, (M.Sc Geriatric Medicine), with the them "Strengthening Nigerian Physicians' Capacity to Serve Older Person". It is for the sub-specialisation of Residents in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine in selected Nigerian Universities. During the meeting, there would be a Formal Presentation of Postgraduate Benchmark Statement and Minimum Academic Standards (PGBMAS) in Applied Gerontology.

 

The invited stakeholders include National Post Graduate Medical College, West African College of Physicians, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Chief Medical Directors of University Teaching Hospitals and Provosts or Deans of Medical Colleges and Heads of Departments of Internal Medicine and Family Medicine, among others to articulate a sustainable framework for program delivery.

 

 

The Objectives of the Meeting include:

i.  Deliberate on the structure, organisation and duration of proposed M.Sc Program in Geriatric Medicine and its functional inter-loop with Applied Gerontology and other related disciplines.

 

ii. Identify skill gaps in the delivery of health care sevices to older persons at all levels of health care.

 

iii. Identify the gaps in Geriatric Medicine in the training of Nigerian Physicians and 

 

iv.  Deliberate on the steps to the development of a locally relevant and globally competitive program in Geriatric Medicine, among others.

 

The Meeting is scheduled to hold as follows

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Rui Gama Vaz, WHO Representative in Nigeria.
