The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) is a regulatory body for Nursing Education and practice in Nigeria and has among its functions regulation of training and practice of Basic and Post Basic Nursing and Midwifery Programmes.
This regulatory body is also responsible for processing of licensure and registration of all Nurses/Midwives across the country, following a period of 5 days capacity building named Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme (MCPDP) for Nurses.
The Directorate of Nursing Services and State Nursing and Midwifery Committee have the control and supervisory authority of the N&MCN in the State to ensure compliance to standard of practice as stipulated by the N&MCN.
The records of those trained, registered and licensed by the N&MCN as well as pre-accreditation monitoring visits conducted revealed that majority of Nurses trained and practicing in the Federal, state , Local Government and Private Institutions are practicing without valid license.
This practice contravenes the provision of the N&MCN which prohibits any persons not registered in accordance with the regulation to hold any appointment in the Public Service of the Federation, State or in any Public or Private Institution or body.
In view of the above, I am directed to inform you that the Nursing and Midwifery Committee Lagos State Inspectorate team will commence inspection from 25th to 29th July 2016 and it will be mandatory for all Nurses in your unit to be ready to show their valid practicing license during this period. Heads of Nursing Departments of Federal, State, Local Government and Private Facilities are to prepare adequately with evidence of a reliable nominal roll of Nurses
Please note that this exercise has the approval of the Lagos State honourable Commissioner for health, Dr Jide Idris as stipulated by N&MCN. Any Nurse who has no valid license shall be sanctioned.
W e shall be glad if you treat this letter with urgency by passing across the information to all your Nurses
Signed Mrs Olaifa Clement Ayo, Secretary
