OPINION: Open Letter To The NUC, Please Stop Bsc Human Physiology Or Reform Its Curriculum

It is with all sense of Commitment that I wish to most Frankly Speak on the Social status of Bachelor of Science Human Physiology. I believe one of the Basic function of the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) is to Unify each and every curriculum across all Universities. And so the Big question is "Why does it seem to be Different with Human Physiology".

After a rough sampling of Physiology departments in other universities within the country, I came to realise that most universities have a different curriculum of Human physiology as a course. Some run it as a Five Year course without clinical experience. Some offer it as a four year course with clinical experience while some offer it for four years without the clinical experience.

And when we ask why it is so, the obvious answer is that "The Medical Doctors Hijacked everything".  For the love of God, are the Medical doctors the ones who decide for the NUC?

MOREOVER, it would have been simpler if that was just the case, but the most unfortunate thing of all, is how Physiology Graduates rome the streets looking for jobs irrespective of the fact that there is no specific work place that can professionally employ them.

What we hear is that Physiologist are meant to lecture or make researches. And I get baffled when I hear this. Why would the NUC approve a course that has no labour market bearing.

The most annoying thing is how during their service years at the NYSC, corpers who studied Physiology get refused to serve in any medically related establishment. It is either the medical lab scientist says u need permit for it or the medical doctors say it is unprofessional.

To put this bluntly... having "jacked" all the Anatomys, community medicines, Biochemistrys, Pharmacologies etc, It is so pathetic seeing our corpers and colleagues teach in a primary or Junior secondary schools.

To put salt to our wounds we get most people who ask "What is Physiology?" For how long do we have to keep wasting Students time, who should have studied Geography or Theatre Art but Graduate them with the so-called Bsc Physiology and no place for them anywhere.

Wont it be better if Physiology ceases to exist as a course in our universities Or Be Given a clear map of their functions in the hospital settings or anywhere at all?

I do not wish to annoy God by Saying I regret studying physiology but it is rather unfortunate that The NUC seems to have refused to find reasons to review Physiology's curriculum and save us all such frustration.

Human Physiology Graduates!
