The Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria presents its 9th International Scientific conference, 49th Annual General Meeting and 50th Anniversary Celebration
THEME: SOGON at 50: Promoting Women's Health in Nigeria
DATE: 24th to 28th November 2015
VENUE: Abuja Sheraton Hotel and Towers
I welcome you all, members of SOGON, our friends and partners from Nigeria and indeed the world over to the 9th Triennial International Congress of SOGON, which coincides with the golden jubilee (50th year anniversary) celebration of our dear Society.
The new SOGON focuses on feasibility and impact unto our people and has striven to achieve this through a painstaking implementation of activities hinged on the provisions of the six thematic areas of our 2013 – 2017 five-year strategic development plan – Leadership and Governance; Human Resources Development; Service Delivery; Business and Finance; Knowledge Management and Research, Innovation and Partnerships.
SOGON is presently at the final lap of the full scale roll-out of its two cardinal programs – maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) and volunteer obstetrician scheme (VOS). Mindful of the saying that “information is power” The Society has commenced radio enlightenment program on women’s health, starting with radio stations in various states of Nigeria. The Society has also embarked on collaborative partnerships with Sister Organizations, with the assistance of international partners to carry out reproductive health activities that will impact on the people.
The theme of the 9th international congress – “SOGON at 50: Promoting women’s health in Nigeria” is all embracing, connoting what the Society has done and stood for over the past fifty years of its existence, while calling on members towards a renewed vigor and commitment to the actualization of the ideals and the very essence of the founding members of the Society.
This year’s international congress, coming up in November 2015, the terminal year of the united nation millennium development goal, also provides an opportunity for stock taking of our performance as the bonafide custodians of women’s health in Nigeria.
The sub-themes of the congress – advances in infertility management and fertility regulation; safety nets in maternity healthcare in Nigeria; the mother, newborn and sustainable development goals (SDGs); and reproductive health cancer are also all-encompassing and subtle reminder to all of us as to the wide range of women’s health concerns begging for renewed and increase attention in Nigeria. The presentations centered on these range of topics will no doubt be enriching. SOGON has put in place a formidable local organizing squad to ensure that this year’s congress and anniversary remain memorable to everyone in attendance.
As you attend from Nigeria and all over the world, I have an unflinching optimism that the expectations that inform your participation at this conference will be met beyond imaginable limit.
I wish all of you safe trip to Abuja Nigeria come November 2015.
