Introduction:

The Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) is a two-year in-service training program in Field Epidemiology Practice, Veterinary Epidemiology Practice or Laboratory Epidemiology Practice. The NFELTP was created to serve as a long-term continuing program within the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD). It trains Field Epidemiologists, Public Health Laboratorians, and Veterinary Epidemiologists for leadership positions in various levers of both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture. The trainees provide epidemiological services to the FMOH, State Ministries of Health (SMOH), FMARD and the State Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development (SMARD), through long-term field placements. The program is currently sponsored by the FMOH and FMARD with funding and technical support provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Program Objectives:

Strengthen capacity to respond to public health emergencies such as outbreaks, epidemics, natural disasters, and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases Strengthen public health and veterinary surveillance systems Strengthen laboratory capacity and its participation in surveillance and field investigation Strengthen the linkage between public health and veterinary epidemiology Conduct research activities on priority public health problems Improve communications and networking within the country and throughout the region on public health issues.

Eligibility:

The NFELTP will focus on training persons who are or will become field epidemiology leaders at Federal, State and LGA levels.

  1. Candidates interested in the MPH Field Epidemiology Practice course should have at least: control units at the LGA, State and Federal level will have an added advantage
  1. Candidates interested in the MPH Veterinary Epidemiology Practice Course should have at lease a
  • DVM degree with certification from Veterinary Council of Nigeria
  • Two years wing experience within the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural of confirmation)
  • Recommendation from the Head of Department/ Ministry
  • Candidates working with epidemiology and disease control units at the LGA, State and Federal level will have an added advantage

Acceptability Requirement:

  1. All candidates must satisfy the matriculation requirements of the University of Ibadan (including required credits in English 'O'level exams) as well as the other requirement of the Postgraduate College. Candidates may check the University website for further details.
  2. Individuals accepted to the NFELTP will be required to sign a contract committing them to remain in government service for a minimum of five years following graduation.

Application Procedure:

The application procedures and form will be available on the website of the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan (http://pgcollege.ui.edu.ng/)at a fee. In addition, a fee will be charged for English Proficiency test. The date of the English proficiency test will be communicated. Application procedure will remain open up to 26th April 2019. The deadline for submission of applications is Friday 26th April 2019.

The completed form along with photocopies of relevant credentials, academic transcript and formal statement of at least 250 words explaining the applicant's educational and career objectives and how those objectives correspond with the NFELTP, and authorization/recommendation from the applicant employers should be submitted to the Secretary of the Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan.
