THE 47TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE COMMUNIQUE (IFE 2013)
The 47th annual general meeting and scientific conference of the International College of Surgeons, Nigerian National Section; took place at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital
Complex in the ancient city of lIe-lfe, Osun State, on the 5-8th June 2013. The theme of the conference was "New Trends in Surgical Practice" while the sub-theme was "Public Private Partnership in Surgical Practice" The conference was attended by numerous specialists in all surgical specialties from all over the country

The surgical experts frowned at the current medical tourism out of the country and the ten fold steady increase in the incidence of abdominal gun shot injuries over the last ten years, as observed in one of the scientific sessions. They urged the Government to curtail such activities and unhealthy trends.

The experts also observed with displeasure the current state of our highways and urged the local, state and the federal Governments to continue with the current effort to fix our highways and so put an end to untimely deaths/disabilities of our people at their prime age. With keen interest, the experts also noted the giant strides being recorded in some of our nation's tertiary health Institutions especially in the area of kidney transplantation and minimal access surgery.

The Congress commended and urged the Government to sustain the steady progress of the new surgical specialties and the existing ones in the country.

At the end of the annual general meeting, Prof (Sir) Reginald 0 Ofoegbu, from the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, emerged as the new President of the College, to succeed Prof Francis Chinedu Akpuaka, the immediate past president.
