The Eyeball Summit 2025, hosted by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), has been hailed as a resounding success uniting leading voices in eye health, policy, and investment under one roof. Held at the prestigious Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the two-day summit (May 15–16, 2025) attracted high-profile stakeholders and professionals from across Nigeria’s healthcare and optical industries.
With the inspiring theme: “Shaping the Future of Eye Care in Nigeria: Strengthening Systems Through Strategic Alliances” the summit explored innovative strategies to improve eye care delivery, leadership structures, and investment in the vision care sector. According to Dr. Anderson Chimeziri, President of the Nigerian Optometric Association, the event set a bold agenda for systemic transformation and strengthening Optometrists role in the health sector.
Keynote speakers, including Prof. Uchefula U. Chukwumaeze (SAN, FCArb), Vice Chancellor of Imo State University; Dr. Yemi Ajao; Dr. Deji Osasona; Pharm. Ibrahim Ahmed, Registrar/CEO of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria; Daju Kachollom, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare; Dr. Sarah Shisikame; and Dr. Kenneth Giwa-Amu, delivered powerful insights on policy reform, innovation in optical technology, and the future of optometry in Nigeria.
Dr. Obinna E. Awiaka, Registrar/CEO of ODORBN, reaffirmed the Board’s unwavering commitment to advancing the optometry profession through strategic collaboration, leadership development, and regulatory excellence.
Distinguished panelists including Dr. Onwusoro Ihemelamdu (Federal Ministry of Special Duties), Dr. Salma Anas Ibrahim (Office of the President), Dr. Aminu Mohammed, Prof. Mark Okeji, and Dr. Adesuwa Agbontaen (President, Guild of Optometric Directors of Nigeria) further enriched discussions with practical perspectives on systemic change and policy alignment.
Participants lauded the summit for its engaging dialogue sessions, robust networking opportunities, and innovative exhibitions. Visionary contributors such as Pharm. Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed, Dr. Nkem Okoroafor, and the Association of Optometrists in Public Health Care in Nigeria showcased technology-driven solutions and investment models poised to transform Nigeria’s eye care ecosystem.
Facilitated by Optish Nigeria Ltd., and supported by the Federal Ministries of Health and Social Welfare and the Federal Ministry of Education, the summit marked a pivotal moment in charting a collaborative, innovation-driven future for the nation's eye health system.
