 The Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, has commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for what it described as significant progress in healthcare delivery and institutional development since his assumption of office.

The hospital disclosed that it had recently secured full accreditation for its residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as completed accreditation processes for its Family Medicine and Dentistry departments, seven years after its establishment.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Anthonia Njoku, disclosed this on Monday at a press conference and media tour organised to commemorate the facility’s seventh anniversary.

According to Njoku, the full accreditation for Obstetrics and Gynaecology was granted by both the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She added that accreditation for the Family Medicine and Dentistry departments had also recently been completed.

She said the development would enable the hospital to train more medical specialists while strengthening access to specialist healthcare services across Edo State.

Njoku also commended Governor Okpebholo for providing In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) equipment to support couples experiencing infertility.

She said the equipment would expand access to reproductive healthcare and provide new opportunities for couples who have difficulty conceiving naturally.

“In reproductive healthcare, many couples who find it difficult to have their babies will now receive assistance through the IVF programme,” she said.

The CMD attributed the hospital’s recent achievements to the support of the state government, noting that the governor had approved the absorption of 126 contract workers into the Edo State workforce.

She added that the hospital had also been granted approval to recruit additional medical personnel, resulting in more than 290 direct employments.

According to her, the hospital had further strengthened its role in medical education through a Memorandum of Understanding with Mudiame University, Irrua, under which the facility would serve as a teaching hospital for the training of medical students.

“The partnership strengthens our role as both a healthcare provider and a training institution,” she said.

Njoku also disclosed that the hospital now provides Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) services as part of efforts to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

She said the facility was enrolled on both the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme and the National Health Insurance Authority platform, allowing beneficiaries of state and federal health insurance programmes to access healthcare services at the hospital.

The anniversary programme ended with a guided tour of the hospital's facilities, led by Dr Suleman Ozemoka, during which journalists inspected newly acquired equipment and other services available at the institution.
